Artificial Intelligence (AI) makes it possible for machines to learn from experience and make decisions in a way that is similar to humans. There are many types of artificial intelligence, but the most well-known is that of machine learning. Machine learning takes data and looks for underlying patterns and trends. This allows AI to observe, analyze, and learn from the data and their mistakes.

Artificial Intelligence Across Sectors

While cool and futuristic, AI is not something from a science fiction novel, but rather a reality that is being utilized right now across different sectors. Legal, finance, healthcare, transportation, criminal justice, and more are all using AI in ways that are changing human capabilities.

Finance

One of the most common ways AI is being used in the financial world is through fraud detection. Sometimes it is difficult to see fraudulent activities in larger organizations but AI can identify abnormalities or outliers that may need additional attention. This type of service allows the human element, account managers, to find any issues before it becomes problematic.

Healthcare

Artificial intelligence and deep learning are commonly used in healthcare. Deep learning trains computers on data sets of “normal-looking” verses “irregular appearing” scans of a human body. After thorough image classification and object recognition, AI can be used to find cancer on MRIs with the same accuracy as highly trained radiologists.

Transportation

Autonomous vehicle technology is another major part of AI. Cameras and sensors on automated vehicles compile huge amounts of data and need to process it instantly. These vehicles require advanced algorithms, high-performance computing, and deep learning systems to adapt to ever-changing scenarios. Software is the key element – not the vehicle itself.

Everyday Life

Asking Alexa to tell you the weather or Siri to call a local pizza shop has never been easier – both perfect examples of AI. AI can also develop a recipe based on what’s available in the refrigerator or predict what word will be used next in a text message. Recommended shows that pop up on Netflix or song suggestions on Pandora also rely on AI to help our decision-making process. Utilizing a chatbot when there’s a question about a charge on a cellphone bill has become second nature, and this is also supported by artificial intelligence.

Due to the amount of data we create every day and the computing power that’s available, the use of AI has exploded. It will only continue to grow and become even more relevant and useful in our everyday lives.
